What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that removes excess eyelid skin and fat to create a more rested, refreshed appearance. At Lancaster Plastic Surgery Associates, Dr. Tobias Long, a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, performs upper blepharoplasty for heavy or hooded upper lids and lower blepharoplasty for under-eye bags. For lower eyelid bags, Dr. Long’s technique removes (excises) the excess fat and skin and when the lower eyelid is lax he adds a canthopexy or canthoplasty to support and tighten the lower lid. Upper blepharoplasty is performed in our Lancaster, PA office under local anesthesia, with a typical procedure time of 60–90 minutes and no hospital facility fees or separate anesthesia-team charge. Lower blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room (OR), with anesthesia and facility fees in addition to the surgeon’s fee. After upper blepharoplasty, most patients plan about 7–10 days away from work and social events; most bruising and swelling improve over 10–14 days, with results continuing to refine over 3–6 months.

Which Eyelid Treatment Is Right for You?

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: for excess upper-lid skin and a heavy, hooded look. Available as an all-inclusive self-pay package.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty: for true under-eye bags from herniated fat or excess lower-lid skin. Dr. Long removes the excess fat and adds a canthopexy or canthoplasty when lower-lid laxity is present. Performed in the operating room (OR), so anesthesia and facility fees apply in addition to the surgeon’s fee. See the Lower Blepharoplasty pricing card below.
  • Lower Eyelid Rejuvenation (CO2 + Fat Grafting): for a tired look or dark circles from hollowing and skin quality, without extra lower-lid skin or herniated fat bags. Available as an all-inclusive self-pay package. This is not a substitute for lower blepharoplasty.
  • Four-lid surgery and standalone peri-orbital CO2 or standalone fat grafting are quoted separately at consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelid Surgery

  • How long is eyelid surgery recovery?

Most upper blepharoplasty patients plan about 7–10 days away from work and social events; most bruising and swelling improve over 10–14 days, and results continue to refine over 3–6 months.

  • Am I a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Upper blepharoplasty suits excess upper-lid skin; lower blepharoplasty suits under-eye bags or excess lower-lid skin; lower eyelid rejuvenation suits a tired look or dark circles from hollowing. Dr. Long reviews your eyes, brow position, dry-eye history, and skin quality at your consultation.

  • How does Dr. Long treat lower eyelid bags?

In lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Long removes the excess fat rather than repositioning it, and adds a canthopexy or canthoplasty to support the lower lid when it is lax. Lower blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room.

  • Where is eyelid surgery performed?

Upper blepharoplasty and Lower Eyelid Rejuvenation are performed in our office under local anesthesia, with a typical procedure time of 60–90 minutes. Lower blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room, so anesthesia and facility fees apply in addition to the surgeon’s fee.

  • How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Our all-inclusive Upper Blepharoplasty package is $4,000, and our Lower Eyelid Rejuvenation package is $3,500. Lower blepharoplasty, performed in the operating room, totals $8,100 on our general quote (surgeon’s fee $5,250, LPSA discount -$150, and a $3,000 facility fee, including anesthesia, collected separately by the surgical facility). Four-lid surgery and add-ons are quoted at consultation. Financing is available through PatientFi.

  • What are the risks?

Like any surgery, eyelid surgery has risks, which Dr. Long reviews with you in detail at consultation, including how your eye and dry-eye history affect your plan. Nicotine use of any kind increases the risk of healing problems and poor scars and is strongly discouraged.

  • When can I wear contacts and eye makeup again?

No contact lenses for at least 2 weeks (glasses are fine immediately), and no eye makeup for at least 2 weeks or until cleared.
